PD Day Camp: Understanding the Constellations
September 26 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am EDT
These sessions will introduce students to basic principles in astronomy by working through activities that demonstrate the cultural history that outlines our understanding of the stars in our night sky.
Junior Session (Grades 1-5): Create Your Own Constellation!
This activity will introduce students to the night sky and the many ways in which humans have used patterns and stories to understand them. Following an introductory lecture on identifying patterns in stars and examples of various constellations across cultures in human history, the students will then be encouraged to come up with their own constellations on pen and paper, as well as a cultural origin story for it, and share what they come up with at the end of the class!
