PD Day Camp: Understanding the Constellations

October 7 @ 1:00 pm 2:30 pm EDT

These sessions will introduce students to basic principles in astronomy by working through activities that demonstrate the cultural history that outlines our understanding of the stars in our night sky.

Senior Session (Grades 6-8): Constellation Detectives

This activity will have students exploring the most prominent stars and constellations in the Canadian night sky. Following an introductory discussion on the history of mapping the night sky and examples of various constellations (and the stories behind them) throughout human history, students will individually be given an illustration of a constellation in the Canadian night sky and be asked to assign a name, shape, and cultural origin story to their constellation based on how someone living in 2022 may interpret it.
